Flows, patterns & instabilities

Complex material under flow exhibit pattern formation and the emergence of instabilities, which are characterized in our team.

COMPLEX FLOWS

We study complex flows of foams, gels, dry granulars or suspensions and focus in particular on:
- Shear-banding & wall-slip dynamics
- Hysteresis during drainage/imbibition cycles
- Bubble/particle interaction during suspension drainage
- Aggregation & segregation in magnetic grains avalanches
- Sand avalanches over a mesh

PATTERNS & INSTAbILITIES

Pattern formation and the emergence of instabilities during complex fluid flows is investigated. Among many examples:
- Log-rolling instabilities in suspensions
- Elastic instabilities and turbulence in polymeric fluids
- Capillary washboarding during drainage of a frictional fluid
- Surface instabilities of a slider over dry grains
- Stick-slip during tape peeling
