Photocatalytic materials

S. Parola, F. Chaput, F. Lerouge

Photoactivated materials and in particular photocatalytic systems have become an important field of research since it uses low cost and easily accessible energy (sun rays) and can be used for important applications in the fields of depolution and sun protection. The axis has developed a new technology based on composite semiconducting materials.

Principle of photocatalytic coating

We have also developed an original approach towards photocatalytic flexible coatings. These materials are based on homogeneous dispersion of TiO2 nanoparticles into a sol-gel silica matrix possessing hierarchical porosity. (FR 13 53122, 2013). The composites showed photocatalytic properties among the best of the market, and showed UV protection above the specific resins commercially available.

Beside the optimization of the photocatalytic systems by using plasmonic structures to tune the band gap of the semiconducting particles, materials combining absorbing semiconductors (TiO2) and reflective nanocharges in an hybrid silica matrix will be prepared and used in the protection against UV (absorption) and IR (scattering) lights. This project is funded by the FUI call, project SOLARCLYM and the Innov’R program.
