The chemical and pharmaceutical industries face growing pressure to reduce the environmental impact of manufacturing. Sustainable catalysis, including biocatalysis and electrocatalysis, offers a green and cost-effective path forward. At MSD, our Biocatalysis group has been exploring bioelectrochemistry to combine the selectivity and efficiency of enzymes with electricity as a clean energy source. We identified cofactor recycling as a particularly promising application of bioelectrochemistry in industrial processes. To this end, we developed a simple, robust, and scalable electrochemical method for ATP generation that can drive multi-enzyme cascades at large scale and can also generate nucleoside triphosphates for mRNA vaccine synthesis.
