Associate Professor, Department of Mathematics, Technion.
Visiting Professor 2026–2027: September 1-30, 2026
Host Researcher: Adrien Le Boudec

Biography

Nir Lazarovich earned a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in mathematics with honors from the Technion in 2009 and went on to pursue a PhD in Mathematics, which he completed in 2015. After a postdoctoral fellowship at ETH Zurich from 2015 to 2018, he joined the Technion as a senior lecturer, before becoming an associate professor in 2023. His research focuses on the geometric theory of groups and low-dimensional topology. He has received the Haim Hanani Prize, the Adams Fellowship from the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities, and several awards recognizing his doctoral work and teaching. He currently leads research projects on the structure and complexity of hyperbolic groups.

Collaboration with UMPA

Nir Lazarovich’s visit represents a significant opportunity for UMPA, both scientifically and in terms of training young researchers. A recognized specialist in the geometric theory of groups, hyperbolic groups, and cubic complexes, his work is closely related to that of Adrien Le Boudec, a CNRS researcher at UMPA. Their joint project focuses on the study of abstract commensurators of groups and irreducible lattices in products of locally compact groups—two rapidly evolving areas in the geometric theory of groups. This collaboration aims to help them better understand the structure of hyperbolic groups and to open up new avenues of research on infinite simple groups of finite type. Beyond this scientific program, Nir Lazarovich’s expertise directly benefits the doctoral students in the “Geometry, Groups, and Dynamics” team, several of whom are working on topics closely related to his areas of expertise. He also contributes to the laboratory’s scientific activities by speaking at the team’s seminar and in the “Action!” working group, where he presents his recent work on hyperbolic groups and lattices in tree products.
