The European research project ELOBIO (2023-2026) aims to produce carbon-free hydrogen from biomass. Coordinated by IRCELYON, ELOBIO brings together a consortium of researchers, including members of ENS de Lyon's Chemistry Laboratory.

While hydrogen is an excellent candidate as an alternative to fossil fuels, its production still relies heavily on them. To break this dependence, a European consortium coordinated by IRCELYON (CNRS/Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1) is launching a research project to contribute to the decarbonization of hydrogen. The goal is to produce hydrogen through the electrolysis of biomass (such as agricultural or forestry residues) using renewable energy.

Funded by the EIC (European Innovation Council) to the tune of €3.998 million over four years—as part of the Pathfinder Challenge call “New Pathways for Green Hydrogen Production”—the project began in January 2023.

ELOBIO brings together a consortium of researchers from three French CNRS laboratories (IRCELYON, the Chemistry Laboratory at ENS de Lyon, and IC2MP), two German institutions, two Spanish universities, and a Dutch research institute.
