CANG9152 : C1/C1+ _ The Making of Memory

Our cities are full of statues and street names that commemorate historical figures. Since they have often been there for decades, or even centuries, it becomes tempting to imagine that they are a neutral part of a city's landscape. This, however, is untrue. They are the product of very deliberate choices, and a reflection of the values and objectives of the people that made them. They then go on to shape how we look back at our history.

In this class, we will be looking at case studies of commemoration in the Anglophone world (mostly the UK) and unpicking and analysing the processes that make our memory of the past.
