Title :
Stress induced coregulation of Ty1 retrotransposon sense and antisense transcription
Abstract :
LTR-retrotransposons are widespread transposable elements in eukaryotes. They resemble to retroviruses in their structure and their mode of replication. They propagate via reverse transcription of their mRNA and integration of the newly synthesized cDNA in the chromosomes. Although their mobility has been implicated in the formation of inherited disorders and cancers, there are also increasing evidences that they are a driving force in genome evolution, in many organisms. LTR-retrotransposons are generally repressed by a wide variety of mechanisms of gene silencing or by host factors that restrict different steps of their lifecycle. However, they can be activated by stress and environmental challenges in several organisms. In our laboratory, we use the Ty1 retrotransposon of S. cerevisiae as a model to study the retrotransposon/host relationship. We are focusing our interest on how stress conditions activate Ty1 retrotransposition and how Ty1 integration targets specific regions of the yeast genome.
