Title : Bridging the gaps between signalling, mechanical forces and morphogenesis in the Drosophila egg chamber
Abstract : The aim of our research is to elucidate how genetics and mechanical forces work together during organ morphogenesis. Our model is the egg chamber (or follicle) of Drosophila melanogaster, which is composed of an external epithelial cell layer surrounding the internal germcells. A crucial aspect of follicular development is that the epithelial cells (the so-called ’stretched cells’) change shape (from cuboidal to flattened) under the tension generated by the growth of the germcells and are limited by the extracellular matrix (basal membrane). Over the last few years, we have identified and characterised the key signaling pathways and genes required for cell flattening. We are currently setting up experiments to identify their cellular targets and their interactions.
The next phase of our research will focus on deciphering the mechanical role of internal tissues during this process, by measuring the physical properties of cells and tissues in wild-type and mutant conditions. To get an integrated view of morphogenesis, we will use computational modelling that will combine data obtained with molecular tools, morphometry, and physical measurements.
