Title : "Adhesion, force and form : how cell mechanics control cellular functions ?"

A defining feature of multicellular life is the inextricable interplay between structure and function. Understanding the underlying principles behind structure-function linkages and convertion of mechanical stimuli into biochemical reponses (mechanotransduction) will be therefore the critical barrier to the engineering of complex tissues. Even at the level of single cells, structure and function are coupled by adhesion, involving not only binding of adhesion receptors, but also global changes in cell shape and mechanical tension in the cytoskeleton. In this seminar, I will describe several approaches of my lab to engineer cellular microenvironment (microfluidics, micropatterning, soft hydrogels, etc.) and illustrate how the combination of these tools with simple concepts from soft matter physics can allow to investigate the interactions between cellular and multicellular structure, mechanics, and the regulation of mechanotransduction pathways.
