From Lesbos to Calais, Idoméni, Lampedusa, Calais, Ventimiglia: The number of camps in Europe in 2015-2016 appears to be the most visible sign of what has been called the "refugee crisis". But how were these camps set up? How do they work? What do they create? To answer these questions, is to try to understand one of the most important moments in contemporary history, beyond media clichés and political instrumentalizations.
Yasmine Dimitiz, a sociologist at the Triangle and author of the “Latest news from The Jungle” (in Calais), has worked with Céline Barré, on the publication entitled “From Lesbos to Calais: How Europe makes camps”, which has just been published by Le passage clandestin.
Ranging from informal settlements to closed centers, the 130-paged publication examines these areas created due to the closure of borders, the insecurity of migrants and the need to find emergency solutions. By showing the importance of civic mobilization, it also invites us to question if there’s not another way.
