Development ECO-5113

This course is devoted to studying the process of economic development and the economics of developing countries. It covers a range of key topics to understand why some countries are poor, how markets function differently in poor economies, and the main barriers to the process of economic development. The primary focus of the course will be on empirical and microeconomic studies. It is organized around 6 key topics: education, health, gender, credit markets, agriculture and conflicts.

Course evaluation

Each student is asked to define an independent research topic to explore in a written proposal and a final presentation. The chosen research topic has to be related to the course content, hence development. Each student must complete the following steps for the assignment for the course:

The proposed research question should be submitted (by email) to the instructors by November 20, 2023.
Every student is required to deliver an oral presentation of his/her research proposal to the class on December 15, 2023. Each presentation will be followed by a Q&A session led by another student. The presentation and Q&A session will count for 40% of the final grade.
The written research proposal (see guidelines in the syllabus) should be submitted by email to the instructors by 5pm on December 22, 2023. It will weigh 60% in the final grade.
