Description:
What say you? is a debating course designed to give students the opportunity to express and defend their views and expand their linguistic base, all while engaging their fellow learners in thought-provoking conversation.
This course is loosely patterned after the Oxford Union debating society format, in which opposing teams argue in favour of or against a proposed motion, before the winner is decided by an audience vote.
The weekly debates will explore topics of national or international significance, some of which will be suggested by the instructor, while others will be crowdsourced from among the students based on their personal, academic and / or professional interests.
Debating has been described as “an exchange of thoughts that leaves all parties to it a bit wiser”, and as “a catalyst for innovation”. By the end of the course, students will have grown wiser through sharing with and learning from their peers and will have taken their ability to critically engage with others in English to a new level.
Students will also emerge better prepared for the oral component of English language certifications they are required to pass as part of their overall ENS learning experience.
