Content objectif

This course provides an overview of literature in English through the larger prism of different types of transformations:

  • Jane Eyre stillWide Sargasso Sea

 

  • “Translations” of canonical texts into different time/place iterations, e.g.: Grendel, Gardner’s 20th century rewriting of 8th century BeowulfWide Sargasso Sea, Jean Rhys’ Caribbean prism for Jane Eyre; Salman Rushdie’s Satanic Verses echoing Milton’s Paradise Lost
  • Adaptations of text into other media (film, music, etc.)
  • Literary echoes and crossings between English & other literatures
  • Fanfiction and the blurring of literary borders.
  •  
  • The course focuses on improving the 5
    competencies in English (oral/written
    comprehension & production; oral interaction) by
    providing students with:
  •  a general understanding of the history of English literature and canonic texts
     a grasp of the linguistic transformations from Old to Modern English
     some familiarity with English literature by non-British writers
     the ability to use more complex grammatical and phonetic structures
