The French Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation presented ENS de Lyon with the national 2019 Higher Education teaching award “Passion Enseignement et Pédagogie” designed to encourage institutional commitment to the pursuit of excellent, innovative university teaching and learning. ENS de Lyon won in the "Internationalization" category, for its international “Transatlantic Translation Workshop”.

The PEPS award - “Passion Enseignement et Pédagogie dans le Supérieur” is granted every year by the French Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation. This award is intended to recognize the quality of teaching and to promote cutting-edge modules for learners in higher education. It also commends the commitment of teachers, researchers, teaching teams and student support teams in helping to transform training practices in French higher education institutions. The PEPS Award is awarded in five categories: "Educational Innovation," "Research in Pedagogy," "Support for Education," "Lifelong Learning" and "Internationalization."

The "Internationalization" category rewards remarkable efforts made through a program, a teaching unit or a training course to promote internationalization, opening up opportunities for students to discover other academic, socio-economic and cultural aspects. The École normale supérieure de Lyon was selected amongst the 19 applications submitted. The School was recognized for its international telecollaborative Transatlantic Translation Workshop, a project in partnership with  Barnard College at Columbia University.

This project is led by Ms. Layla Roesler from the ENS de Lyon Language Centre. During the Transatlantic Translation Workshop, French and American students work in pairs, with the task of producing two translations of reports from two online journals (French-English and English-French). This collaborative work, using digital tools (video conferencing and an online translation platform), develops the language skills of two learners with two different languages, as the mother tongue of one student is the target language of the other.

The 2019 PEPS Awards are presented on the National Days of Educational Innovation in Higher Education known as the “Journées nationales de l’Innovation Pédagogique dans l’Enseignement Supérieur (JIPES)” in French. The JIPES event, on 23 and 24 January 2020, brings together stakeholders, decision-makers and practitioners, around a key issue: to invent a 21st century higher education system that responds to the current developments of today’s students by integrating digital technology.
