The idea that markets are not without failures is one of the guidelines of Pr. Joseph E. Stiglitz's research and engagement in international institutions and public debate. As markets cannot self-regulate, it is necessary to think about public policies that can improve their performance, not only economic but also social, to make growth more equitable and sustainable.

ENS de Lyon is pleased and honored to present the Honorary Doctorate Honoris Causa insignia to Joseph E. Stiglitz, American economist, Professor of Economics at Columbia University, and winner of the Bank of Sweden Prize in Economic Sciences in memory of Alfred Nobel 2001.

On the occasion of this ceremony, Pr. Joseph E. Stiglitz will give a major lecture where he will develop his strong criticism of neo-liberalism, associated with a blind faith in free and unfettered markets. In response to populism and demagoguery, it will propose a radical shift based on a progressive economic and political agenda. Progressive capitalism is not an oxymoron, but a way to save dysfunctional capitalism from itself.
