Applicants: What are the language requirements?

Prerequisites in English and French are necessary depending on the discipline and level of studies. You will find below the summary documents. These documents specify the language and level required in each discipline.

This page is only for students who are following an academic course leading to a qualification. If you are an exchange student, please consult this webpage.

Language requirements

Documents to be provided

  • a certificate of your English level
  • a certificate of your French level

For these certificates, only the tests referenced in the reference grids are accepted (see tables of accepted level tests)

ENS de Lyon referenced level tests

Exceptions

  • you have studied in a French- or English-speaking country
  • your studies have been made entirely in French or English

If you are concerned by one of this exception, please join a document written by yourself explaining this point (in French or English).

In the event that circumstances external to the candidate do not allow him/her to provide an official language level certification within the required deadline, a letter of explanation from the candidate accompanied by a language level certificate signed by a pedagogical manager of his/her home university will be able to complete the file.

If no prerequisites are required, you don’t have to attach any documents.
