    Overview

The Master of Social Sciences at ENS de Lyon offers a two-year training in social science research. This interdisciplinary master’s allows for the rigorous acquisition of quantitative and qualitative methods of data collection and analysis in their historical, spatial and social dimensions, with classes and seminars shared with other programs at the M1 and M2 levels. Each course also enables you to acquire a specialization based either on a disciplinary field or on a thematic approach.

Offering a specialization in sociology, the "Socialization, knowledge, institutions" program offers advanced training in the theories, methods and know-how of the discipline. Its aims to develop  a broad and open view on different topics, fields and approaches in  sociology. This program also emphasizes links with other disciplines such as sociolinguistics and political science.

Drawing on the specialties of the faculty members at ENS Lyon and CNRS researchers, this program will enable students to focus on one or more topics, particularly in the field of gender, language, education and knowledge, health, or work and professions. However, the study of specific topics is primarily conceived as a means to master advanced concepts, a wide array of research methods and general modes of reasoning. From a general sociology perspective, the emphasis is placed on the fine and contextualized analysis of the mechanisms that structure our collective ways of acting and thinking.  They will be considered as well from the point of view of socialization processes, the various forms of knowledge mobilized by individuals, as well as the functioning of contemporary institutions.

This course is primarily aimed at students with a background in sociology, but it is also open to students from other fields demonstrating a strong motivation to invest in this discipline. Based on learning through  practice and field-research, this program provides both disciplinary knowledge and general skills in the collection and analysis of qualitative and quantitative data. The internships carried out during the training can lead to a professional specialization, which can be used to go on for a PhD or consider other career opportunities in teaching, public administration, NGOs or consulting.
