Full professor of Biochemistry, working in the committees of international affairs and of graduate studies at the Institute of Chemistry of the University of São Paulo
Visiting professor 2024-2025 from 1st of November to 31st of December
Inviting professor: Carlos Marques
Biography
Mauricio Baptista is professor of Biochemistry at the Institute of Chemistry, University of São Paulo (USP). He holds a degree in Pharmacy and Biochemistry from the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences at USP and obtained his M.Sc. in Biochemistry from USP’s Institute of Chemistry. He holds a Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry from Marquette University (USA), and followed his postdoctoral research in Photobiology at the University of Wisconsin–Madison.
Professor Baptista has held several leadership positions and also served as Associate Director for International Cooperation at USP's International Office. In 2006, he was a visiting professor at Université Joseph Fourier in Grenoble, France.
Collaboration with the Chemistry Laboratory
Professor Maurício S. Baptista's visit to the Laboratory of Chemistry at ENS de Lyon presents an exceptional opportunity to strengthen research in photochemistry, a core focus of the lab. A leading expert in photochemistry and its biological applications, Professor Baptista brings cutting-edge knowledge on endogenous photosensitizers—bio-molecules with unexpected roles in light-induced oxidative stress. His current research on FICZ and its effects on membrane models aligns perfectly with the lab's expertise, particularly in collaboration with Dr. Carlos Marques. His presence promises rich scientific exchanges, potential collaborative breakthroughs, and expanded international ties—especially with Brazil—while also enriching the local scientific community through lectures and student engagement.
