Honors and awards

Alain Pumir, CNRS Research Director at ENS de Lyon Physics Laboratory, receives the 2023 Ed Lorenz Lecture Award from the American Geophysical Union (AGU).

Presented annually by the American Geophysical Union (AGU), the Ed Lorenz Lecture recognizes original contributions to the field of nonlinear geophysics. This lecture honors the life and work of the renowned mathematician and meteorologist, Ed Lorenz, for his pioneering work in nonlinear geophysics.

In 2023, the AGU awards the Ed Lorenz Lecture to Alain Pumir, CNRS Research Director at the Physics Laboratory of ENS de Lyon, which he joined in 2008.

Alain Pumir was present at the AGU Annual Meeting, December 13-14, 2023, to present the Lorenz Lecture, in the Nonlinear Geophysics section. This section focuses on quantifying nonlinear behavior through analysis of geophysical data and modeling using the mathematical tools and approaches of fractals, chaos, scaling, critical phenomenon, nucleation, cellular automata, and self-organizing and complex systems.
