Between decolonization and fratricidal war, what do we know about Vietnam's internal fractures? What were the possible paths for this colonized and violently decolonized country? What were the sources of inspiration and the hybridizations proposed to conceive independence? What kind of revolutions and wars did this country experience in the 20th century? These are just some of the many questions addressed by François Guillemot, a historian specializing in contemporary Vietnam, in his book.

He invites experts and the curious alike to discover contemporary Vietnam “seen from the inside”, before tracing the major stages in its history. He covers the “Decline of Imperial Vietnam and the Colonial Shock” from 1858 to 1925; “Radicalism and New Forces: Vietnam's Possibilities” from 1925 to 1938; “Revolution, Famine and the Conquest of Power” from 1939 to 1946; “Independence in Division and Civil War” from 1946 to 1955; the “Two Vietnams in Revolution and War” from 1955 to 1975; and “Reunified Vietnam at the Crossroads” since 1976.
