At the INRIA - Académie des Sciences 2025 awards ceremony on November 25, Jean-Michel Muller, CNRS research director at LIP - Laboratoire de l'Informatique du Parallélisme (Inria Center in Lyon/CNRS/ENS de Lyon/UCBL), received the highest distinction, the INRIA Grand Prize.

ENS de Lyon extends its warmest congratulations to Jean-Michel Muller, CNRS Research Director at LIP - Laboratoire de l'Informatique du Parallélisme (Inria Center of Lyon/CNRS/ENS de Lyon/UCBL). On November 25, 2025, at the INRIA - Académie des Sciences awards ceremony, he received the highest distinction, the INRIA Grand Prize.

Designed to highlight a scientist who has made an exceptional contribution to the field of computer science and mathematics, the INRIA Grand Prize recognizes Jean-Michel Muller for his rich scientific career and, in particular, his internationally recognized work in computer arithmetic.

He has made a significant contribution to scientific research into the representation of numbers on computers and the reliability of numerical calculation methods, enabling major advances in the field of computer circuit and software design.

“All calculations are built on the arithmetic of our machines. If we compromise on its reliability, it's like building on quicksand, explains Jean-Michel Muller at INRIA. The difficulty is that computers can only represent a limited number of values. And with each calculation, a small rounding error can creep in. Multiplied by billions of operations, micro-errors can accumulate and distort the results.”

We would also like to congratulate the two other winners of this edition:

  • Teddy Furon (Inria Center at the University of Rennes), winner of the Inria-Académie des sciences-Dassault Systèmes Innovation Award.
  • Clémentine Maurice (Inria Center at the University of Lille), winner of the Inria-Académie des sciences Young Researchers Award.
