As part of the ENS-IISER partnership, Kiran PANGHAL, IISER PhD student, completed a three-month PhD stay at the RDP.
In the frame of the international strategies and common actions of the Écoles normales supérieures in France, ENS de Lyon has taken the lead in the creation of a partnership with the Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISER) in India.
In 2018 the ENS-IISER network implemented a framework agreement allowing their institutions to collaborate on different levels: development of exchange programs, joint training, seminars, joint research and publications, as well as research internships.
Kiran PANGHAL's experience at ENS de Lyon
Kiran, PhD student, completed her three-month PhD stay at the RDP under the supervision of Charlotte KIRCHHELLE. She studies at IISER Mohali, and her research focuses on plant development biology, exploring the mechanical properties and various other aspects of plant growth. She joined ENS de Lyon for an internship that would allow her to gain hands-on experience and broaden her scientific perspective.
Kiran initially learned about the mobility program through her supervisor, who forwarded the opportunity. Although she was not familiar with ENS de Lyon at first, she reached out to Charlotte the previous year, establishing communication that convinced her this internship would be an ideal opportunity to experience research in France.
Upon arrival, Kiran was warmly welcomed by Charlotte, who introduced her to French culture, cuisine, and local weather during lunch. On the same morning, she attended the RDP team gathering, where Charlotte introduced her to fellow Indian researchers, ensuring she had a supportive network for her research needs.
During her stay, Kiran had the chance to attend an international conference organized by Charlotte, interacting with scientists using advanced technologies and engaging in high-level discussions. She acquired numerous new skills, including techniques in electron microscopy and other methods she had only encountered theoretically in India. The advanced facilities, high-resolution microscopy, and well-managed lab environment allowed her to work efficiently and safely, while approachable staff members were always ready to help. Even French-speaking colleagues who did not speak English were supportive and helpful.
Kiran was also impressed by her living experience in France. Residing near to the campus and using public transport made daily life convenient and stress-free. She noted the friendliness and attentiveness of the French people, who made her feel welcomed and supported.
Kiran did not encounter significant difficulties during her internship; she was provided with all necessary support, including internet access and physical arrangements. She had no particular suggestions for improvement, feeling the program ran smoothly.
Reflecting on her experience, Kiran strongly recommends ENS de Lyon to fellow students. She emphasizes that the mobility program was transformative scientifically, culturally, and personally, broadening her research perspectives and providing valuable exposure to European culture. She believes it is an invaluable opportunity for young researchers seeking to expand their horizons.
