IDEXLYON launched a call for IMPULSION projects in July of this year in order to strengthen its attractiveness.
Around thirty applicants from this fourth call for projects have been preselected by the Université de Lyon's member institutions.
The IDEXLYON Academic Group suggested 24 candidates, who were then approved by the COMEX. Each project will receive on average 54,000 euros in funding for a two-year period.
Four researchers from the ENS de Lyon are laureates of the Impulsion 2020 call for projects:
- Audrey BIENFAIT (Laboratoire de physique) - Quantum circuits for submicron paramagnetic resonance
Magnetic resonance spectroscopy can be used to detect and identify paramagnetic species and usually relies on detecting the absorption or emission of microwaves by their spins. As these spins are weakly coupled to the microwave field, its use is restricted to sufficiently concentrated samples. Using quantum circuits techniques, the detection sensitivity can be considerably improved, allowing to probe new types of samples, possibly of sub-micron size.
- Jérémy FENSCH (CRAL) - Star formation and structure of primordial galaxies
The structure of primordial galaxies is still not reproduced by current models, and this questions our understanding of the physics of star formation. I developed multi-scale numerical simulations to better understand the interplay between the physical processes at play. I propose to hire a postdoc in order to extract the scientific data and produce predictions from these simulations.
- Sinan SARPCA (GATE) - Equilibrium Allocation of Teachers and Students Across Universities
This project will develop a formal economic model of provision of higher education and study the allocation of students and teachers across universities in equilibrium. We will then use the model to examine the effects of some recent and potential future changes in market conditions on (i) students’ educational outcomes and costs of education they face, and (ii) teachers’ earnings and sorting across universities.
- Alain TCHANA (LIP) - SOS : Sprinkled Operating System
Sprinkled OS is a new design model that Alain Tchana proposes for supporting distributed Virtual Machines (VMs) on a disaggregated rack, with the illusion of a single system image per VM. The main motivation of this model is to facilitate the porting of legacy guest code (initially designed for the computer-centric model) to a disaggregated architecture.
The success of the call for IMPULSION projects is a testament to, and strengthens the attractiveness and excellence of the Lyon Saint-Étienne site, while contributing to developing the IDEXLYON project.
This initiative will be receive 1,3 million euros of funding from IDEXLYON.
