A richly documented work that invites readers to discover another way of doing philosophy: in close dialogue with art history. Thinkers such as Hegel, Foucault, Derrida and Deleuze did not merely observe works of art; they drew on the methods and concepts of art history to fuel their own thinking.

Why were they so interested in thinking about images, touch, style and symbols? Because these concepts, explored by art historians such as Winckelmann, Riegl and Panofsky, enable us to rethink major philosophical themes in depth, but also to address questions often considered technical or marginal, such as objectivity, perception and time.

By combining different fields of knowledge, this book shows that philosophy is not impoverished by contact with other disciplines: on the contrary, it is enriched and opened up to new ways of understanding the world, works of art and ideas.
