On Tuesday October 15, the French Academy of Sciences unveiled its awards. Congratulations to Physics laboratory members Patrice Abry and Laurent Chevillard, and School alumni.
Patrice Abry and Laurent Chevillard – members of the Physics Laboratory –, and two School alumni – Théau Peronnin and Gilles Carron – are honored by the French Academy of Sciences for their work.
The French Academy of Sciences unveiled the various prizes it has awarded for 2024. Through these prizes, which honour scientists and researchers, the French Academy of Science contributes directly to its mission of encouraging scientific life.
The French Academy of Sciences pays tribute to them at the award ceremonies held under the dome of the Institut de France on October 15, 2024.
Patrice Abry
Recipient of the Grand prize Mines Télécom
Patrice Abry is CNRS Research Director at Physics Laboratory of ENS de Lyon (LPENSL). He heads the Institut Rhônalpin des systèmes complexes (IXXI).
Patrice Abry is interested in the theoretical modeling and practical analysis of scale invariance (fractal) phenomena in real-world applications as diverse as hydrodynamic turbulence, cybersecurity and Internet traffic, adult and fetal intrapartum cardiac variability, slow macroscopic brain activity, artwork textures or, more recently, the spatio-temporal dynamics of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Laurent Chevillar
Recipient of the Servant prize
Laurent Chevillard is CNRS Research Director at the Physics Laboratory of ENS Lyon (LPENSL) and at the Institut Camille Jordan.
Laurent Chevillard develops models of fluid turbulence, observed in experiments and simulations of the Navier-Stokes equations. Benefiting from an extensive network of collaborators, he has constructed random fields that account for the fine statistical structure of these flows, and proposed simplified stochastic dynamics to realize them.
The annual IMT-Académie des sciences Grand prize (€30,000) created in 2017 was founded by the IMT (Institut Mines-Télécom, France), in partnership with the Fondation Mines-Télécom. It is designed to reward a scientist who has made an outstanding contribution through a body of recognized scientific advances that have helped to advance issues arising in the industrial or business world, in the service of a sustainable economy, in one of the scientific and technological fields of interest: the responsible industry of the future; digital sovereignty and sobriety; energy, the circular economy and society; engineering for health and well-being. The IMT-Académie des sciences Grand prize is awarded without condition of nationality to a scientist working in France, or in Europe in close collaboration with French teams.
The Servant prize is a biennial prize (€5,000) created in 1952 in the field of physics.
Two Alumni awarded
Théau Peronnin
Théau Peronnin is CEO, co-founder of start-up Alice & Bob and a former doctoral student at the School, in the physics laboratory where he defended his thesis in 2016. He receives the Yvan Peychès prize along with Raphaël Lescanne.
Gilles Carron
Gilles Carron is Professor of Mathematics at Nantes University and alumni (class of 1987 - Sciences). He was awarded the Léonid Frank prize.
The Académie des Sciences paid tribute to the 2024 winners at an awards ceremony in the Coupole of the Institut de France on October 15 (in french).
