This year, the 2019 European Astrophysics Week will be organized in Lyon by the CRAL (Astrophysics Research Center of Lyon) from June 24 to June 28, 2019. An exceptional program of events, for everyone to enjoy, will celebrate astronomy for three months from May to July. There will be a host of exhibitions, lectures, round table discussions and even a picnic, to study the planets that surround us, diving into the sciences of the Universe and taking us on a journey to discover the secrets of the macrocosmos!

Europe's largest astrophysics conference

European Week of Astronomy and Space Science 2019 (EWASS 2019) brings together the entire European community in astronomy and astrophysics. This year, the largest conference in Europe in this field will be organized in France, for the second time since 1999, and for the first time in Lyon, by the Center for Astrophysical Research in Lyon (CRAL) [1], with the Lyon Geology Laboratory (LGL-TPE) [2] and the Lyon Institute of Nuclear Physics (IPNL) [3], under the aegis of the European Astronomical Society (EAS). The event will contribute to the visibility of science in the city of Lyon, bringing together 1,200 to 1,400 scientists, from Europe but also from all over the world, with a total of nearly 850 events led by specialists in the field.

The EWASS 2019 will take place on June 24-28, 2019 on the “Manufacture des Tabacs” site in Lyon

For this exceptional scientific event in Lyon, the Local Organizational Committee of EWASS 2019 (Manager: Isabelle Vauglin) [4] has organized an ambitious program of scientific events to introduce the general public and schools to French astrophysics research, with the goal of promoting science and its major societal issues to a wider audience. For three months, from May to July 2019, everyone will have a chance to find out more about our Universe.

These events also mark the 50th anniversary of the Man on the Moon, 80 years since the beginning of CNRS as well as the 100th year of the Parisian International Astronomic Union (UAI) in 1919.

The Universe: research made in Lyon

The organization of the EWASS 2019 symposium in Lyon is also an opportunity to show the key role played by the Université Lyon 1, CNRS and ENS laboratories in astrophysics research worldwide to the international astronomical community. This research in the city of Lyon contributes to some of the major advances in science of the Universe, including the discovery of the most distant individual star ever observed, the realization of the largest interactive map of the Universe or to help choose the landing site for ExoMars 2020 to search for traces of life on Mars.

They are part of the scientific project of The LabEx [5] LIO - Institute of Origins in Lyon, that has developed an original and innovative approach to the question of origins: such as matter, large-scale properties of the Universe, large cosmic structures or the solar system.
