Biography

Andrew Pell studied Natural Sciences (Chemistry) at Selwyn College, University of Cambridge, UK. He then obtained his PhD in 2009 at Cambridge on the development of new methods in high-resolution nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy.

From 2009, he carried out a post-doctorate at The Very High Field NMR Center pf Lyon (CRMN), where he worked on the development of new solid-state NMR methods for paramagnetic materials, before returning to Cambridge in 2013 for a second post-doctorate working on the application of these new methods to energy storage materials.

In 2016, Andrew Pell was recruited as Assistant Professor in the Department of Materials and Environmental Chemistry at Stockholm University, Sweden. In this position he developed a research theme on the use of solid-state NMR to tackle problems of geometry and electronic structure in materials with complex magnetic properties, ranging from systems to topological insulators. He was promoted as associate professor in 2019.

Andrew Pell was recruited as a Professor at ENS de Lyon in 2020, joining the Chemistry Department and the CRMN. His current work aims to determine in detail the structure of complex (para)magnetic materials using solid-state NMR, and to relate these features to the function of the materials as components of their devices.

In 2024, he is appointed Junior Member of the Institut Universitaire de France.
