On Sunday, February 11, we'll be celebrating the International Day of Women and Grils in Science. This year, the United Nations has placed the 9th Assembly of this day under the theme "Women and Girls in Science Leadership, a New Era for Sustainability". An opportunity to highlight the importance of promoting equal access and participation in science for all. And to discover the initiatives of ENS de Lyon, as well as the women researchers, teachers and alumni honored.
Anne L'Huillier and the place of women in science
On Thursday February 1, the school welcomed Anne L'Huillier, an alumnus of ENS de Fontenay-aux-Roses, who was awarded the 2023 Nobel Prize in Physics for her work on electron dynamics and the attosecond. Anne L'Huillier took part in a round-table discussion on the place of women in science. Videos of this round-table and the conference that preceded will soon be available on ENS de Lyon website.

Clémence Peronnet, sociology meets mathematics... and women mathematicians
In January, has been published Matheuses. Les filles, avenir des mathématiques (Girls, the future of mathematics), the result of a collaboration between three young scientists: Clémence Perronnet, Claire Marc and Olga Paris-Romaskevich. Based on a sociological survey of 45 16-year-old girls who took part in mathematics courses, the book examines inequalities in mathematics and computer science, with a view to combating them more effectively.
Clémence Perronet is affiliated with the Max Weber Centre, where she defended her thesis, directed by Christine Détrez, in 2018. A specialist in the sociology of culture, education, science and gender, her research explores the links between social inequalities and the construction of taste, practices and commitments to science.
On Friday February 16, she will be the guest of the Bibliothèque Diderot in Lyon, along with her co-author Olga Paris-Romaskevich, a mathematician, for a meeting moderated by Christine Détrez.

Sciences, a women's profession. 8th edition
Showing by example that all scientific professions are mixed, deciphering stereotypes, overcoming preconceived ideas - this is the ambition of the annual "Sciences, a women's profession" day organized, with the support of ENS de Lyon, since 2017.
The event, organized by the Femmes & Sciences association, LabEx ASLAN and the ICAR and CRAL laboratories, is bringing together some 500 high school girls from the Lyon Academy to convince them to have confidence in their ability to succeed. Heading up the organization: Audrey Mazur, research engineer at LabEx ASLAN and ICAR, and Isabelle Vauglin, astrophysicist at CRAL and President of Femmes & Sciences.
Symbolically, the day is held on March 8, International Women's Day.
Research projects and awards: the 2023 laureates
Marie Sémon, recipient of an ERC Consolidator grant
Marie Sémon is a biologist, professor at ENS e Lyon and affiliated to the Laboratory of Biology and Modelling of the Cell (LBMC), where she is co-leading the CIGOGNE team with Sophie Pantalucci, CNRS research director. The project PLEIOTROPY - Evaluating how pleiotropy influences genetic, developmental and morphological evolution by using rodent teeth, will be carried out within this research team.
CNRS Medals
Among the CNRS 2023 medallists, ENS de Lyon has two women recipients:
- Sabine Fourrier, an archaeologist specialist in the history of the Cypriot kingdoms, CNRS research director at HiSoMa laboratory - History and Sources of ancient world, is awarded the Silver Medal
- Mathilde Paris, a biologist specialist in the bioinformatics study of animal genomes, CNRS researcher at the Institute of Functional Genomics of Lyon - IGFL and alumnus of the school (Sciences competitive exam 2001), is awarded the Bronze Medal

Members of the Institut Universitaire de France
In 2023, two faculty members of ENS de Lyon were elected members of the Academic Institute of France:
- Anne Benoit, assistant professor at the Computer Science Department, affiliated to the Parallel Computation Laboratory (LIP), becomes Senior Member, after being elected Junior Member in 2009
- Anne-Sophie Noël, assistant professor at the Arts and Literature Department, affiliated to HiSoMa laboratory, becomes Junior Member
Young researcher prizes
Alice Briole (biology), Edwige Cyffers (physics) and Aurora Pignata (mathematics), all graduates of ENS de Lyon, have been awarded grants from the L'Oréal-UNESCO program to support the involvement of young women in scientific research.
Julie Rodet, who completed a Master degree in Geophysics and Seismology at ENS de Lyon and is now a PhD student at LGL-TPE, University Lyon 1, was awarded the 2022-2023 prize in the i-PhD state innovation competition.
2023 Lodewijk Woltjer Lecture
Last but not least, Isabelle Baraffe, member of the CRAL, Professor of Astrophysics on secondment at the University of Exeter, UK, is awarded the EAS 2023 Lodewijk Woltjer Lecture.
